Family ties are hardly unusual in hockey but rarely is it a generational thing — unless you’re Joan and Emma Dobson.
Mother and daughter were both on the scoresheet for Cork Church of Ireland as they notched the result of a busy Irish Junior Cup second round weekend, a 4-0 demolition of Ballymoney at the north Antrim venue.
The Joey Dunlop Centre is famously a graveyard for southern teams but Sinead James got C of I motoring with a penalty stroke before the Dobson connection put them out of sight with a goal each, Emma Rumley adding gloss to the scoreline late on.

Bandon were the day’s other big winners as Ciara McCarthy made it six goals in two games with a brace in a 3-1 defeat of Trinity, Liz Buttimer notching the insurance goal.
Catholic Institute were undone by a golden goal as they lost 2-1 at 2010 winners Randalstown, while Loreto put themselves in the favourites seat with a 5-0 win over Cork Harlequins on Leeside, adding to an 8-1 demolition of Portadown in round one.
David Herbert’s double completed a brilliant weekend on the road for C of I, with Simon Wolfe also on the scoresheet as they won 3-0 at Suttonians – all the goals coming in the first half - to advance to round three of the men’s competition.
There was no such luck for Bandon, who found Lisnagarvey’s Phil Stirling too hot to handle — he cracked in all five of his side’s goals in a 5-0 victory for the defending champions
Domestically, Catholic Institute and UCC were warming up for their Irish Trophy quarter-finals next weekend but both have plenty to work on.
Institute’s goal-scoring has improved in recent weeks and Simon Brickenden, Dara Crowe and a cracker from John Wallace saw them on target three times against Cork Harlequins.
The difficulties, however, lied at the other end, where they again suffered badly in an 8-3 defeat. The Hobbs family stole the show here, with John converting two penalty strokes, Dan notching two drag-flicks and Rob adding another, with Brian Hayes Curtin also nabbing a brace and Jason Black collecting the other.
UCC blew a glorious chance to end their Bandon hoodoo as they led 2-0 in the sides’ Munster Senior Cup final in West Cork on Sunday but contrived to lose 4-3.
Andy Gray’s drag-flick found the top corner before Fionn O’Leary got a super touch to John Catchpole’s crash ball to seemingly put the students in control.
But Bandon have made a habit of being a thorn in College’s side, and of late have also very much become a second-half team — just ask Institute, who led 2-1 at the break in a recent league encounter only to eventually be blitzed 5-3.
Stephen Jackson’s men found a way back into it when Andrew Scannell dragged one home and Fred McElroy tipped in to level it.
Ireland A international Ali Smith took over then, tucking away a penalty stroke and beating two defenders in the circle before lifting over advancing UCC keeper Kieran Healy for 4-2.
College did pull one back with nine minutes to go, Colin Manning teeing up O’Leary to crash home an upright reverse but they couldn’t get another to force extra-time.
Bandon now progress to an away tie with Quins on February 18 with C of I hosting Institute in the other semi-final.
