Hopes of a Cork double in the Intervarsities evaporated in Kilkenny tonight, as UCC’s women and CIT’s men both fell at the final hurdle.
UCD exacted revenge for last year’s Chilean Cup final defeat to UCC, as a Rosie Carrigan golden goal gave them a 1-0 win and denied the Cork girls a prestigious three-in-a-row.
The sides had played out a 0-0 stalemate in the group stages on Monday, and the final proved to be an equally tight affair, with chances at a premium.
UCC weren’t happy with the awarding of a short corner to their Dublin rivals in extra-time, and there was to be further heartbreak as Carrigan bagged the crucial strike after a goalmouth scramble.
Earlier in the day, UCC had earlier come through a dramatic 3-2, golden goal semi-final win against Ulster Elks, in a game which had eight internationals on display.

An early lead for the Jordanstown side was cancelled out when Audrey O’Flynn roofed a drag, but the Elks went back in front just after the break.
Julia O’Halloran missed a glorious chance to draw level when she saw her penalty stroke saved ten minutes later, but Ali O’Connor hauled UCC level from a short corner with seven minutes to go.
College thought they’d won it in extra time, only to see a golden goal ruled out by the umpires. But it mattered little as Eibhlin O’Donoghue deflected home a short corner shot to send them through to the decider.
UCD’s passage to the decider was far more straightforward, as they thumped local rivals Trinity 4-0.
In the men’s Mauritius Cup, Ulster Elks retained their title thanks to a 2-1 win over CIT.
The Bishopstown college had defeated the Elks 2-1 in the pool stages, thanks to two Alastair Smith strikes.
The Bandon star was on target again yesterday, but it proved to be merely a late consolation, as Simon Todd and Michael Purcell had already done the damage for the Elks.
CIT’s luck certainly wasn’t in, as player-coach Andy Gray missed a penalty stroke and also saw a flick cleared off the line.
The Corkmen had a surprisingly easy route to the final, thumping a star-studded DCU outfit 5-0 thanks to goals from Roger Gray, Stephen Parker, Phil O’Driscoll, Smith and Erasmus student Geert Fromme.
In the other semi-final, UCD were stung by two late Ulster Elks goals. Ben Grogan’s drag-flick put the Dubliners in the front at the break, and they could have sealed the deal had Luke McSharry’s deflection not sailed over with 15 minutes remaining.
The Elks had forced a hatful of saves from UCD netminder Stephen O’Keeffe, and they finally levelled through man-of-the-match Todd from a broken-down corner with ten to go, before Neil Hamilton won it late on.

CIT wouldnt be entering it anytime soon. A lot of their players are looking at IHL standard hockey, entering at Divsion 3 Munster level would probably kill some of them along with the munster hockey website scoreboard considering some of the scores they would rack up. A full strength CIT team would not lose a game until they hit Division 1 but with the player ability that CIT has, then entering in the league proper would do more harm than good to that generation of player and no doubt cost some international caps.
No reason they couldn’t enter at a lower standard initally without their big guns.
Surely a wider range of competion, no matter in what league is to be welcomed .To broaden the base of hockey, especially mens hockey can only been seen as a positive thing for the game.
They’d need a new pitch first before a proper club could be started. Then you will run into a situation where you must ask who do you send to the intervarsities? The players who represent the club and play div 3 hockey or the stars of Quins/CoI/Bandon who play Div1 and IHL hockey?
UCC has the policy that the club players represent the college at the varsities rather than taking the UCC students who play hockey for other clubs.

While I would be delighted to see new clubs being set up in Munster, I dont think CIT would have a player base that’s sizeable enough to sustain a league side. At present they are fortunate to be in a position where they have a wave of good quality players at their disposal, but eventually these players will have to move on from the college. At this years varsities, looking at their team in the programme, they only had 14 players. Take out the players who play for Quins, CI and Bandon….dosent even leave half a team.
Regarding the UCC policy. For anyone who wishes to play in the intervarsities with UC, must play their club hockey also with ucc.
Examples would be on the girls side….hollie moffit and julia o’halloran as 2 examples, were in college for a year or two, but played their club hockey elsewhere. Therefor they are ineligable to play with ucc for intervarsities. They both moved to UCC last year, and no play in the intervarsities.
CIT as a club might last, but they would need to get one solid person to stay year in and year out to ensure the smooth running of the club. A bit like UCC. Because the ladies club do not allow you play with the club unless your in college, there is a high turnover of players. They have a devolpment officer in place who makes sure everything is done year after year.
But than again there is one exception to the rule as always. This regards the UCC mens club. Any player, who attends CIT, can play their club hockey with UCC, and than represent CIT in the intervarsities. It is a loop hole. An example would be greg o’driscoll from last year. He played for cit in the it tournaments, played his club hockey in ucc and represented cit in the intervarsities.
maybe CIT culd adopt the GAA concept of a Seandun team. Selection of any players who play club hockey div 2 or lower and combine to become a 1st div seandun team…just like ucc senior hurlers.
