Carolan, who came to Ireland from South Africa two seasons ago to take the reins at Pembroke Wanderers, is now director of coaching at Corinthian and this summer helped Ireland U21 men to European gold. He will take over the running of the Irish side for the coming couple of months as the Irish Hockey Association continue their bid to have a new full-time coach in place by the end of September. Carolan will be assisted by Andy Smyth, a former Ireland U18 Boys coach, while the man currently occupying the U18 role, Graham Shaw, joins the senior side’s support staff. The first port of call will be to take charge of the panel for the World League round one which runs from September 7-9 in Wales. There, Ireland will take on the host nation, Sweden and Austria in the new FIH event.

  1. What’s the bets that the new coach will not be Irish? Is it a reflection on our coach education system that no Irish coach can take the men’s team?

  2. I agree that I feel the next coach will not Irish or from North, I disagree about the coach education system as I think it is really developing some very sound coaches. The problem is availablity and a want to to give up your job to take on the appointment. I would feel, that for many it is a case that they would be giving up a better paid job to take on this role. This job would be idea for the likes of a young Irish coach who wants to coach full time and who has proved themselves at International Under Age level. I would also feel that said coach should have coached in another country to see and learn different coaching methods.
