Four-star Moffett inspires C of I in Quins rout

It might not have been the happiest of days for UCC’s Hollie, but there was something to cheer about in the Moffett household tonight as brother Alec was the star of the show for C of I in a 9-0 rout of Cork Harlequins B. Alec has outshone some of the brighter lights in the C of I side in recent weeks, netting a crucial strike against Quins a few weeks ago. He added four more yesterday in as C of I strolled to victory, ensuring Jonny Bruton wasn’t the headline act despite netting a hat-trick himself. John Jermyn and David Hobbs rounded off the scoring. C of I’s B side held up their end of the bargain to ensure it was a clean sweep for Garryduff yesterday, as goals from Richie Dorman and Stuart O’Grady gave them a 2-1 win over Bandon, for whom David Smyth netted. UCC’s game with Harlequins was postponed due to a frozen pitch at the Mardyke, meaning they have a lot of catching up to do after their match with Catholic Institute a fortnight ago befall the same fate due to a clash with the Irish Hockey League. It was also a good weekend for C of I in Division Two, with their C team going top courtesy of an 8-0 thumping of Bandon C on Friday night, while their D team moved into third courtesy of a 6-2 defeat of Limerick. Bandon B and Belvedere played out a 2-2 draw, a result which keeps the Ballincollig outfit in fourth, while the west Cork side are second from bottom but have a game in hand over most teams. In the women’s league, Belvedere claimed their first win of the season, as Anne Marie Dooley’s strike gave them a 1-0 over Ashton in a basement battle. Ashton have now replaced the Ballincollig side at the bottom of the table, due to an inferior goal difference. Catholic Institiute were the only Munster side competing in the new Irish Trophy competition this weekend, but they were given a stern examination by Galway, eventually winning out on penalty strokes after a 1-1 stalemate. They will now take on Suttonians in round two on November 15. There was a remarkable tale to emerge out of a women’s Division Two game, where goalkeeper Bridget Bateman stepped in at short notice for Quins having not set foot on a hockey pitch for 12 years – and helped her side to a 2-1 win over Ashton. Staying in Division Two, leaders Catholic Institute were surprisingly held to a 1-1 draw by basement side UCC, but they remain top as Bandon were defeated 3-1 by C of I.
