Stephen’s Day showdown for big two

The annual St Stephen’s Day hit-out that is the Peard Cup final assumes some extra importance this year as it provides the first seasonal hit-out between Cork Harlequins and Cork Church of Ireland (Farmer’s Cross, 2.30pm). Despite the move to playing every side in Division One three times this year, Munster’s perennial arch-rivals have yet to lock horns. C of I are looking for a three-in-a-row having won the trophy twice in 2011, after the 2010 final was moved to March amid that winter’s big freeze.

The blues and Quins have both won all their league games thus far meaning a form guide is hard to ascertain. Quins have won the games that matter between these sides recently — hence why they have claimed the league title in the past two seasons — and David Eakins in particular has been punishing sides from corners. C of I have lost John Jermyn but gained Ali Smith since their last encounter and will hope the former Bandon man can provide some moments of magic in the Quins circle. Stephen Sweetnam is in fine form too, as two breathtaking backhand goals against C of I B proved last week. With three league meetings and a potential Munster Senior Cup final pairing on the agenda, Wednesday’s clash could be the start of a fascinating series between these two.
