UCC moved into third place in the Munster Senior Women’s League earlier tonight thanks to a 1-0 win over Bandon in a re-arranged game at the Mardyke.
The students were looking to bounce back from the 1-0 defeat to Cork C of I that put a dent in their title ambitions 10 days ago, and a second-half goal from Irish international Julia O’Halloran proved the difference in an entertaining encounter.
College, who were missing forward Miriam Crowley through illness, dominated possession, forcing seven shorts while ensuring Bandon didn’t get any.
But the profligacy up front which has crept into their game this season cost them once more, until O’Halloran deflected home the winner from the penalty spot on 47 minutes after decent buid-up play from Ali O’Regan.
The win sees College move up to third at the expense of Catholic Institute ahead of next week’s crunch clash with Cork Harlequins, and they are three points behind C of I albeit with a game in hand
However, Bandon are still looking for their first win since their opening-day, 6-0 hammering of Institute in September.

In my opinion Munster hockey is becoming the laughing stock of Irish hockey – firstly in men’s hockey we had UCC 2nds withdrawing from the Irish Junior Cup & now in ladies hockey we have Belvedere & UL withdrawing from the Irish Hockey Trophy. How do we expect to be taken seriously? If you are not prepared to travel, then you shouldn’t enter Irish competitions. It makes a farce of the competition and the draw. Last season in men’s hockey Midleton 2nds withdrew from the Irish Junior Cup & were fined for their actions. I presume that the same action will be taken against this seasons offenders?
900 i believe…irish trophy withdrawal I believe is 1300. What is the bloody point in entering. Disgrace….beveldere shouldn’t even be fielding teams…have you looked at their nominations…how many of them are actually playing hockey.
According to one of their players they had 6 or 7 2nds players playing with them when they went to institute….they only brought 11, where are the rest of the players!!!!
What is the best ladies club to join in munster? Thinking of joining a club when I get there. I play division one here but wouldn’t really start, but come on after 10mins and play the rest of the match:impact sub as to say. Mainly play n defence but will play anywhere. How much does it cost to play hockey at various clubs?
Well it would firstly depend on where you’re going to be based; there are plenty of senior clubs in the Cork and Limerick areas, plus a few in Waterford and Tipperary, but nothing really in Kerry or Clare.
I don’t know where you’re referring to when you say you play Div 1 “here”, but assuming you’re at the same standard there is in Munster, you’d be looking to join one of the following:
Cork Church of Ireland
Cork Harlequins
University College Cork
Catholic Institute (Limerick)
Bandon (west Cork)
Belvedere (Cork city)
Ashton (Cork city)
University of Limerick
It wouldn’t be my place to go into the various merits or otherwise of each club, but you can always go to their websites (see the ‘Hockey links’ section on the right hand side of this site) and have a look around, or else wait until you get here and sample the atmosphere at a few clubs in your area.
Subscriptions will vary from club to club; Cork Harlequins for example is €320 for full membership, but I imagine it varies from club to club depending on what facilities they can offer and how many teams they field.
UCC ladies only allow students to play for them im afraid.
