Former Irish international Ivan Bateman stepped back into the goalkeeper’s pads for the first time in years to help Cork Harlequins
see off Cork C of I B 4-0 on Saturday.
Adam Daunt Sheehan, Jason Black, Julian Dale and Paul Lombard got the goals but 44-year-old Bateman – pictured below in coaching mode – was the story of the day as he stepped between the sticks to offer a temporary solution for his club, who are without a first-team netminder since the departures of Chris Daunt (Sweden) and Jack Ryan (rugby).
Women’s Division 1
Catholic Institute 9 (E Bromell 3, N Carroll 2, C O’Shea 2, A Kenny, H Redden) UL 0
Catholic Institute made it 17 in two games as they hit nine without reply past UL, Elaine Bromell bagging three of those.
Christine O’Shea began the rout before Holly Redden played a neat one-two with Naomi Carroll to double up. An Aoife Kenny flick to the top corner was sandwiched by two Bromell penalty strokes as Insta relentlessly punished the students’ defence, before Bromell completed her treble with a fine diving effort.
Carroll collected two goals while O’Shea added another from close range to complete the scoring.
Cork Harlequins 5 (C Sargent 3, N O’Leary, K O’Neill) Ashton 1 (C McCarthy)
A Cliodhna Sargent hat-trick helped Cork Harlequins pull away from Ashton to win 5-1, the Irish international defender’s lethal penalty corner strikes proving important in a game that was level at the break.
Sargent put Quins in front early on but Ashton dug in defensively and were rewarded at the other end when Emma Harrington (pictured below) played in Tracey Johnston, the former Quins player laying on the assist for Caroline McCarthy to finish.
But the champions played patiently and Sargent netted two more from corners before youngsters Niamh O’Leary and Katie O’Neill got their first goals of the new campaign to seal the three points.
Limerick 2 (J Lyttle 2) UCC 5 (A-K Trevor 2, E Dobson 2, M Crowley)
Emma Dobson scored twice on her UCC debut as they prevailed 5-2 away to Limerick on Saturday.
The former C of I and Ashton forward helped her side amass a 3-0 advantage with Amy-Kate Trevor and Miriam Crowley also on target from a couple of scrappy efforts.
But Jenni Lyttle’s brace – a corner and a superb diving reverse – had the hosts back in contention at 3-2, only for Trevor and Dobson to score again after the break and give College some breathing space.
Cork C of I 3 (Amy Roberts, Ali O’Regan, Emma Rumley) Fermoy 0
Cork C of I are making the early running as they completed a convincing victory at Garryduff last night, adding to the 4-0 win at Limerick last weekend.
Amy Roberts broke the deadlock early on when a corner was switched back to her in the injector spot, but Fermoy’s counter-attack game yielded some dividends for them with the best chance falling to skipper Aibhin O’Sullivan – her reverse was saved by Holly Moore and the follow-up went the wrong side of the post.
Another set-piece did further damage for the hosts, Ali O’Regan following up smartly after Munster U16 goalkeeper Kathryn Buckley – who had a fine game deputising for the injured Ondine Roche – had made a good reaction save off Jen Hales’ thunderbolt.
Fermoy continued to soak up most of the pressure as Ali O’Connor and Emma Barber turned the screw for Eddie Kirwan’s charges, but kept the margin to two while offering a flickering attacking threat themselves until C of I finished them off late on. A very tidy solo run by Emma Rumley along the baseline saw her cut inside and slip the ball under the advancing Buckley to seal it.
