St Andrew’s continued their remarkable hoodoo over Wesley College, hammering them 6-1 in yesterday’s All-Ireland Schoolboys Championships final.
All four of the Booterstown school’s titles in the past 13 years have come at the expense of their Dublin rivals in the final, although never by such a large margin.
Andrew’s had snuck past Wallace High 2-1 in yesterday morning’s semi-finals while Wesley hammered 2010 and 2011
champions Banbridge Academy 8-2.
Day 2
Luck wasn’t on the side of Munster’s three schools as their All-Ireland Schoolboys Championships dreams went up in smoke in Dublin yesterday.
Bandon Grammar conceded late as they pushed for a winner themselves to lose 4-3 to Sullivan Upper, after two goals, one a wonderstrike, from Julian Dale had put them in a decent position.
Ashton were also caught out late on, a contentious effort from Banbridge Academy giving them a 3-2 win after Simon Wolfe and Mark Gallagher had twice pulled back deficits for the Cork city boys.
Limerick’s Villiers put in a sterling defensive shift against fancied Ulster side Wallace High, goalkeeper Mark Armitage making a number of terrific saves but they ultimately fell 2-0.
Bandon did finish on a high by hammering Methody 5-1 to finish second in their pool, while Ashton made a raft of changes and lost 6-3 to RBAI. Villiers went down 2-0 to Cookstown.
Day 1
Ashton are best placed of the three Munster sides to challenge for All-Ireland Schoolboys Championships glory after a frustrating opening day in Dublin.
The Cork city school were below par in the first half against St Columba’s but kept their goal intact and fashioned a short corner goal as Simon Wolfe setup Paul Holland with right minutes to go.
Wolfe saw a penalty stroke subsequently saved however, and Columba’s made them pay as Freddie Morris’ backhand strike salvaged a 1-1 draw with two minutes remaining.
Bandon Grammar lost 4-1 to Wesley, Ben Shanahan claiming their consolation as Luke Madeley notched a hat-trick for the Dubliners, to leave them with a mountain to climb to top their pool.
Villiers gave Mount Temple a tougher game than expected but a 1-0 defeat means they also head into wino-or-bust territory in their two games today.
