Fermoy last weekend earned the distinctive honour of becoming the first team in Munster to win their respective league, as their Division Three side completed their 12th win from as many games.
Ladies hockey is certainly on the rise in north Cork, with the club boasting one of the newest pitches in the province and proving they have a quality team to match – one which will be playing its hockey in Division Two next term.
Their 2-1 win over UL has given them an unassailable maximum total of 36 points from 12 games, with two away games to come.

C of I and Clonmel are next in line, on 22 points each with two games in hand, but as each can only accrue a maximum of 34 points with just four games remaining, Fermoy have been crowned champions.
Despite an early scare which saw them trail 1-0 to the Limerick students, a short corner goal from Ann Galvin settled the nerves, and the prolific Trish Fitzpatrick took Ciara Sexton’s pinpoint pass to hit the winner with five minutes remaining.
Fermoy’s attention will now surely turn exclusively towards the national stage, where they are in the shake-up once again for the Irish Hockey Challenge.
They face a long trek to Raphoe in the semi-finals on March 6, where they’ll be looking to repeat last season’s feat of reaching the final. That ended in heartbreak with a penalty strokes defeat to YMCA, who face Monkstown in the other last four tie.

any news on the other matches in munster. i.e the cups. no news on munster site. heard there was a massive win for limerick mens firsts against ucc in their cup match.
ya heard limerick scored 14 goals they must ave some serious players up front and rumour has it that robbie ryan wasnt playn for them i tink limerick are takin over institute!!!!

Wrt UCC’s loss – The UCC team played Cath Inst II’s in the McLean cup earlier in the day before the Limerick game. Tight game first half, 0-0 at HT but 6-0 at the end to Inst. Then UCC had to travel over to Limerick HC – not surprised they conceded so many in their second game of the day.
The branch need to look into this – several Cork teams have played 2 games in Limerick on the one day – playing both clubs which has meant large wins for whoever plays the Cork team second that day. Can distort the tables.
For Limerick teams, it’s preferable to getting walkovers but it’s not great either for players playing in such one-sided games, not as enjoyable as playing tight games. Will do lose us players…
Also congrats to Fermoy – great achievement – best of luck in the Irish challenge!!

Agree with “vet” 11:53. How is that possible when Institute compete in Division 1 & Limerick compete in Division 2?

i was watchin the limerick match and the scorers were george blackwell, llywellin mooney, melvin buttimer, matt shine, tom clarke all got one. matthieu got 3 and nathan eacrett got 6. the majority of the scorers are all youngish lads. with nathan being i think 15/16. this is a good sign for limerick scoring wise with robbie ryan nt bieng there.
a simple answer would be to play the matches when they are set for and not try and kill themselves by playing two though matches in a day.

A new era for Limerick? Suppose they also had a good win against Institute Ladies Firsts. Fact is Limerick are an average second division side with high opinions of themselves. Division one hockey in Limerick City will unfortunately only be seen in Rosbrien for the long and distant future. 2 division one teams would be a massive achievement for a city with such a small player base in comparison to Cork, but being realistic, Limerick are off the pace and by no means a team on the verge of a “new era”.
Not sure if anyone in LHC have high opinions of themselves. In fact, they appear to be very grounded and understand they need to keep the kids coming through. Having one of the most organised underage sections in Munster will benefit the club in the long term and they are going the right way around producing a good side for the future. No one in the club expects to be challenging CI and Quins anytime soon but they are getting there – they have achieved a lot in a very short period of time.
What about the Bruff Girls!!! Watch out they might be more than one DIV 1 Team in limerick.
UCC were down to 9 men prior to travelling to play LHC due to a hand injury suffered during the Institute game to a UCC player- to be fair to the guy he played on and was almost as good with 1 hand as others with 2 – from both teams…

Well done to Fermoy in getting promotion, great to see more first teams entering the higher divisions, congratulations to John and the girls.
On the Limerick debate, the bickering on this blog is ridiculous. LHC do have a good underage system and huge volunteer support, as do many of our clubs, and I doubt the previous comment regarding its organisation was from a LHC member.
i think credit should be given where credit is due.having a good limerick side in munster can be only good for hockey in general.we should embrace all the teams in munster that are doing well.as for people saying that limerick would not do well in division 1 i would disagree.last year institute only beat limerick 1-0 AET in the flynn cup and at the moment i am sure they would give institute ucc and quins b a good run in division 1.
as for ucc playing 2 matches in one day has nothing to do with limerick and all they can do is play whats in front of them.
i have a feeling that this could be a good year for LHC………….
what about a good year for Bruff Hockey Club who are on for the double. I believe they beat UCC 8 nil in the cup semi today. looks like they are on for the league and cup double. I believe they are only div 6 but fair play to then only set up in 2003!!!!!!!
Ha Ha, This arguement has been going on for years that limerick are getting better and catching up on institute which is good to see but limerick are still a bit off the pace but getting there. you cant base all these arguements on a 14-nil win over ucc that only had nine men and played two matchs on the same day it was unfair to ucc and its them i feel sorry for limerick should have just played the first half took the score and gave ucc two players and enjoyed the second half what ever happened. Its not good to have that happening in hockey, can turn people off playing and munster hockey does not need that.But i will agree Limerick are getting better and hopefully some day they will get in to division one. It would be great to see two limerick teams there.But until then Institute is the place to be if you want to play 1st division hockey and will stay that way.
