Ireland senior women’s coach Gene Muller won’t need to be told where his side’s problems lie after their three-game practice match series against Great Britain. While the girls in green improved defensively after an opening day, 4-0 loss – going down 1-0 in the following two games -the fact they failed to score in any of the three outings is a worry with the World Cup Qualifier in Chile now just two months away. A much-improved defensive performance in game two — spearheaded by Ballymoney’s Bridget Cleland — restricted GB to a single goal from a 20th minute penalty corner. However, Ireland failed to force a single corner as they struggled to create chances of their own. Team manager Sally Ann Fanagan admitted her side were taught “a lesson in clinical finishing” by GB in Monday’s 4-0 defeat. The hosts stuck away their only two penalty corners of the day and scored two soft goals from play, with Rachel Mulligan failing to finish off the best Irish chance of the day when she was put in the clear by Emma Smyth.

  1. So Ireland’s record for 2010 to date is Pl 5 W0 D0 L5 GF 1 GA 11, it bodes well for the celtic Cup and WCQs

  2. To be fair, they have played 2 of those games against a team loaded with professional hockey players and the GB side who are in the top 8 in the world.

Agreed it does not bode well for the WCQs with Austrailia in the group, but it would be nice to support them rather than point out the negative things!
