FLOOD APPEAL: Railway Union’s ladies hockey club have extended the hand of friendship towards their southern brethren via a novel fundraising venture to help UCC cope with the losses suffered during the recent floods in Cork. The Park Avenue outfit, who like Hermes, have a strong connection with the Cork college due to past and present players, are inviting clubs to partake in a “University Challenge” table quiz at 7.30pm in The Baggot Inn in Dublin on Tuesday December 15, in a bid to see which club has the most brains to burn. Entry is €40 for a table of four, with all funds raised going to the UCC hockey club, who are currently without a home ground after flooding laid siege to The Mardyke. The majority of the club’s equipment was also destroyed. Those wishing to enter a team to see if they can be crowned “brainiest hockey club”, should email Sinead Walsh on sineadwalsh00(at)hotmail(dot)com to confirm their entry. VETS LEAGUE: The Irish Hockey Association is running a Munster Hockey Women’s Social Vets’ League on Monday evenings at Cork Harlequins HC, Farmer’s Cross, near Cork Airport. The six-a-side league, run in association with the Irish Sports Council’s Women in Sport initiative, is aimed at all women over 30, particularly those new to the sport or who are looking to take up the game again. More than 30 women took part last year, and you don’t have to be a club member to take part; individuals will be accommodated into the teams for the league, which will be played in a social environment. The league takes place from 7.30pm-8.30pm on Monday evenings. For more information, please contact Andrew Gray on 087 9705227.
