C of I odds-on to retain title

Cork Church of Ireland are odds-on favourites to retain their men’s Munster Senior League title tonight, as they welcome Cork Harlequins B to Garryduff (6.30pm). C of I need just a point to take their first piece of silverware this season, which will come as welcome relief as they have already ceded their Munster Senior Cup to Quins and are out of contention in the Irish Senior Cup and Irish Hockey League. Elsewhere, Cork C of I B head to the Mardyke hoping to fasten their hold on third place, while UCC – who will finish bottom of the table no matter what the result – will look to restore some pride by claiming their second win of the season.

The regular women’s league season comes to a conclusion this weekend, as C of I travel to Institute tomorrow then host Bandon on Easter Monday, but the results are academic all around as none of the trio can improve on their current positions. In any case, Cork Harlequins and UCC have already claimed the automatic IHL spots, with C of I destined for the wildcard playoff. They will definitely be joined there by Greenfields, who have claimed their first Connacht title in 15 years. There is still one final act on the women’s front, which comes on April 26 when Quins and UCC meet again in a playoff to determine the destination of the title. The students lost the toss, so the game will be played at Harlequin Park. A number of cup finals are also down for decision this weekend as the season begins to wind up. The second string sides of C of I and Quins meet in the men’s Munster Junior Cup final on Monday at Harlequin Park, while the women’s second and third division cups are also up for grabs. Waterford and C of I contest the latter at Harlequin Park tomorrow, while Ashton and Catholic Institute will fight for the second-tier cup at the same venue on Monday.
