Cork Harlequins have come in for some eyebrow-raising criticism regarding some alleged rough-house tactics in their 2-2 Irish Hockey League draw with Cookstown last weekend.
Cookstown skipper Ian Hutchinson launched a broadside at Stephen Dale’s Quins outfit following a physical encounter at Coolnafranky, where the visitors came away with a share of the spoils despite missing half a dozen regulars.
“We started reasonably well, but couldn’t ever get into top gear against as poor a Cork Harlequins side as you are likely to play,” Hutchinson told the Mid Ulster Mail.
“Credit were credit is due, they were a very hard-working side, but I wouldn’t want to see what they were doing off the ball creep into the Irish game. There is no need for it and I felt the umpires didn’t protect our players enough.
“I like the game played hard but fair and that is not what went on today. However, that is not an excuse for a poor performance.”
Quins were reduced to ten men on three occasions in the final quarter, apparently for remonstrating with the umpires. But Eddie Dore’s late strike ensured they put a halt to their IHL losing streak, denting the ‘Town’s ambitions in the process.

i have never heard such a hypocritical article in my life! cookstown spent the entire game surrounding the umpire and giving abuse without ever being reprimanded. and as far as the off the ball incidents went, we gave as good as we got, what about ian hutchinson himself following through late on colin ross, knocking him to the ground over the sideline completely off the ball! and there were many other such incidents.

i can’t believe that a cookstown player, let alone Ian would come out and level such criticism against another team.
i’ve played enough times against them to know that they are no saints.
Im sorry now but thats aload of rubbish Ctown are as dirty if not worse then Quins and if the umpire doesn t see it tough luck!
Its about time some physicality has come into the game. This is why hockey is struggling to gain support in the underage systems. Kids see other alternatives like rugby and gaa as good alternatives. Besides i heard from a reliable sources on both sides of that particular game that the game was tough but fair. Quit winning and get on with and enjoy the game.
More of the same, We saw this kind of thing when the Rugby AIL started,
Ulster teams seem to think they should dominate everybody, in so called garrison games. Time the Munster boys showed them who is boss, just like our rugby players.
These comments seem like sour grapes to me. Obviously, the “Red Army” expected to beat an under strength Harlequins team and get a bonus point. Harlequins stood up and were counted and from what I’ve heard were unfortunate not to win.
