Cork-born Irish international hockey ace Jason Lynch has declared his intention to compete for Ulster rather than his native province in this season’s senior and U21 interprovincials.
Midfielder Lynch, who won his first Irish senior cap against France this summer, currently plays for Co Down outfit Lisnagarvey whom he joined from Cork C of I in 2007 upon entering Queens University to study business.
While Lynch turned out for Munster at both senior and U21 level last term, increased college commitments and travelling considerations have led him to throw his hat in with Ulster this time around.
The 20-year-old former Bandon Grammar star is understood to have agonised over the decision, but he is by no means the first player to switch allegiances.
Should he be selected for Ulster for the senior event, Lynch will have to face his former team-mates on his old stomping ground, as the competition will be held at Garryduff from March 13-15.
Munster’s coaching committee chairman John Hobbs said it was disappointing to see any player declare for another province.
“There are quality midfield players in both Munster and Ulster, I think he’d be hard-pushed to get into either side, but I hope it works out for him,” he added.
Meanwhile, Ireland U16 girls coach Una McCarthy has named a 34-strong panel of triallists ahead of their 2009 programme.
McCarthy finally got to run the rule over the cream of the country’s young talent at last weekend’s rescheduled interpro blitz in Milltown, and was pleased with what she saw.
“While I’m sure was difficult on the players and coaching teams, the format of a one-day tournament still showed the wealth of talent that is present at the U16 level,” she said.
“With most of last years U16 squad moving up to U18 it was great to see all the new players who are breaking through at this age group, and I am really looking forward to working with these players as we prepare for our programme.”
McCarthy has picked 10 players from tournament winners Ulster, seven each from Leinster and Munster and five each from Connacht and South East for the February 1 trial.

i think that the amount of travel needed to play with Munster was a large factor in his decision

Your command and grasp of the English language is beyond belief.
Great Comment, did John Hobbs not wish him well when he said “I hope it works out for him”? For future reference the correct spelling is thinking not your effort of “thinknig”.
I suppose if you were thinking you would have noted that it would be difficult for Jason to get into either midfield:
Munster: John Jermyn, Mark Black and David Hobbs, perhaps from the bench Sean Nicholson and Philip Smith for a bit of bite in there. (Defiantly not a starting spot there)
Ulster: Geoff McCabe, David Ames, Michael Watt, Simon Todd, Stephen Redpath and Johnny Quigley. (Don’t hold out much hope here either)
I know I would have all of those ahead of him on either squad.
In relation to knowing all of Munster wishes him well, I’m sure you have conducted a meticulous survey to that effect, sampling all the clubs in Munster. I’m surprised John Hobbs even wished him well he must have had his diplomatic hat on at the time and be speaking as part of the Branch, wishing him well crazy.
I know for a fact some of us at the Duff Bowl aren’t happy anyway.
Munsterman-Why was John Hobbs comment so stupid? Lynch left Munster hockey and Hobbs is bound to be aggrieved about this-however Hobbs still wished him well in his transfer and was correct in saying that it would be tough to get into either side
Knowning Jason from school and from hearing reports from people he made the right decison.
He’d no choice because of the amount of travel involved, every weekend for who knows how many weeks, and then back to college, there is a reason why, he would just go like that!

clearly you are just trying to stir up some trouble as you are obviously not a member of the duff bowl as all of us wish him well with ulster, jason would love to play with munster but it is just not possible with all of the travel required.
Totally agree with the Duff man,Info@munsterman you clearly have no clue what you are talking about and are not part of the blues.Jason is only 19 and has a good few caps for Ireland and a few goals to.I have no doubt in my mind that he will become a regular in the full Irish squad in the near future.As for your comment about the Ulster midfield your clearly just jealous of the talent that is coming through at ci on a regular basics.Stop coming on this and just taking complete rubbish.Jason is one of the best young players coming through and will get into that Ulster midfield with a shadow of a doubt.I know everyone in Ci and Munster wish him well and well be looking forward to having you back in Ci and the Munster colours in the near future.Case closed.
