Hockey players and fans are being asked to write their name into Cork Harlequins’ history as part of a novel fundraising venture by the club.
As part of a campaign encouraging contributors to “put your name in the picture”, the site plan of Quins’ grounds at Farmers Cross has been divided into 3,200 blocks, and will be displayed on the club’s website and on a billboard at the side of the Harlequin Park clubhouse.
The blocks can be purchased at a cost of €25 each, meaning you can have your name forever associated with a spot at the club that’s dear to your heart, be it for numerical or nostalgic reasons.
For example,
Southern Fried has put its name to the spot from where it scored its first goal in senior hockey (well, as close as I could get) but the options are endless; it could be where you park your car, your seat at the bar, where you always stand to watch games or where you hit your first six runs.
Those who buy a block (or more) will be entered into a series of raffles lasting three years, with cash prizes of up to €1,000 and tickets to IHL games up for grabs.
There are also commercial rates available for companies, who can have their logo featured on the map, while the online version will also be clickable, allowing viewers to be redirected to the company’s website.
A number of high-profile Irish hockey stars have already contributed to the scheme, including Irish internationals Justin Sherriff, Cliodhna Sargent, Alan Sothern, Mark Ruddle and Conor Harte, to name but a few.
