Cork C of I and Munster U18s will both be sweating on the fitness of Nick Burns, after the star forward suffered a knee injury in their 8-0 Peard Cup rout of Catholic Institute. Burns had already hit a hat-trick before he and Ivan Moore were both red-carded following an ugly clash in which Burns was hurt, and required stitches in his knee. He is now likely to miss C of I’s Irish Hockey League assignment in Cookstown next week, but is expected to be back in time to spearhead the Munster U18s’ interpros challenge later this month.

Philip Sweetnam’s double and further efforts from Andrew Daunt, Nigel Buttimer and Philly Smith completed the rout for C of I. Bandon also progressed in the Peard Cup, as Andrew Scannell, Graham Kingston and David Smith got the goals in a 3-0 win over Cork Harlequins B. David Eakins hit five as Quins A routed C of I B 9-0 in the sole men’s league encounter, with Eddie Dore, Phil McLaughlin, Paul Lombard and Lee d’Alton completing the scoring at Garryduff. Having also lost 2-1 to Cork Harlequins last weekend, C of I B are still without a point to their name in the league. Meanwhile, Glenanne ensured Ireland will have two representatives in the last 16 of the EuroHockey League for the first time, after they got the favour they required from German side Mannheimer in Terrassa, Spain yesterday. Having got a bonus point in a 2-1 defeat to Mannheimer on Friday, Glens then created some slick deflections and defended their circle brilliantly in a 2-2 draw with Grunwald Poznan 24 hours later. Glens then needed Poznan not to better their result against the Germans; and they got their wish, as Mannheimer won out 5-1. Glens now join Pembroke Wanderers in the KO16, and also became only the third side in the past two seasons to break the seeding system and make it through as a third seed from the group stages.
