Campbell is Insta’s destroyer-in-chief

Ashton 3 (Kate Harvey, Emma Harrington, Cliodhna Murphy) Bandon 1 (Laura Buttimer) Emma Dobson starred on her Ashton debut, the former Cork C of I starlet helping her father Alan’s side to a 3-1 Munster league success over Bandon. Dobson has joined long-time Munster underage team-mates Shauna Fagan and Kate Harvey on the Blackrock Road and she helped ignite them after a frustrating scoreless first half. Harvey dragged home the opener before Dobson setup captain Emma Harrington for number two as Ashton took control. Bandon hit back when Laura Buttimer fired in a drag but the hosts owned the last quarter and made it safe when Cliodhna Murphy re-routed Fagan’s corner shot to the backboard. This was an important win for Ashton, taking them into mid-table and away from what looks increasingly like it will be a three- or four-way scrap to stay afloat. Limerick 0 Catholic Institute 10 (Katie Campbell 4, Eimear Ryan 2, Eimear Cregan 2, Kym Daly, Naomi Carroll) Katie Campbell went to town on her childhood club as Limerick felt the backlash from Catholic Institute’s near miss against Ashton in a major way. Institute have had a frustratingly truncated opening to the season with long gaps between games and haven’t been sparing anyone as a result. Munster U21 hitwoman Campbell notched four while Eimears Ryan and Cregan grabbed a brace apiece. Ger O’Carroll’s girls are now three from three and matching UCC and Quins’ 100% records, while Limerick will spend this week regrouping for a trip to Bandon next week that already assumes a great deal of importance as they look to steer clear of the choppy waters at the foot of the table. Paidi Hartnett’s students haven’t been destroying teams the way Institute and Quins have but it’s points on the board that matter and with five wins from five, College have met their expectations for the opening portion of the campaign. UL haven’t really recovered from losing to Limerick on day one and have no points from four games. Given they go to Quins next before hosting Institute, things don’t get any easier for George Blackwell’s girls. Men’s Div 1 Cork C of I 5 (Gary Wilkinson 5) Cork C of I B 1 (David Whitaker) With Bandon crying off their Peard Cup tie, C of I brought forward a league tie against their seconds to ensure the weekend wasn’t a total washout – but took time to get going. David Whitaker dragged the seconds in front early on, continuing his good goalscoring form shown in Ashton colours at the Irish Schools, but it was his Munster U18 team-mate Gary Wilkinson who stole the show thereafter. The Ireland U18 hitman struck twice before the break to edge the firsts back into the ascendancy and smacked in an unanswered second-half hat-trick – all five goals coming from play – to secure the three points.
