Ondine Roche saved two penalty strokes to help Fermoy earn their first point of the season in a jittery 0-0 draw with Limerick.
With the inclement weather decimating the remainder of the Division One fixtures, the late hit-off time of 3pm in north Cork allowed the storm to clear in time for a tense basement encounter.
Fermoy started strongest with Trish Fitzpatrick, Áibhín O’Sullivan and Sarah-Jane Riordan creating openings but Limerick were given a way back in when a foul in front of goal led to a penalty stroke.
Laura Peters didn’t quite catch hold of her effort though and Roche – arguably Munster’s form goalkeeper this season – saved easily, but it woke Limerick up as Sandra Hedigan, Shelley Forde and Munster U16 attacker Laura Foley drove them on.
The visitors – who were without influential attackers Jenni Lyttle and Lorraine McGowan – were awarded another penalty when a goalbound shot struck Joan Lonergan on the Fermoy line. Hedigan stepped this time but Roche guessed right to save well.
Forde then smacked a shot against the upright with the first half’s last act but the second half was a much closer affair with Cork camogie star Orla Cotter – making her first appearance of the season for Fermoy – a dominant figure in midfield.
She almost won it in stunning style late on, beating four players on a mazy 70-metre run but Limerick goalkeeper Kate Healy was out fast to smother before she could get her shot away.
Saturday morning’s storm saw the remainder of Munster’s top tier games bite the dust, either due to flooded pitches or goalposts being moved off-line by the gale force winds.
