Cork Church of Ireland B’s brothers in arms claimed the Munster Junior Cup with a 3-0 win over Cork Harlequins B at Harlequin Park yesterday.
C of I fielded brothers Trevor, Roger and Andrew Gray in their side, an unusual feat in itself, with the latter opening the scoring following a surging 50-yard run on three minutes.
Quins dominated the remainder of the half, but their cause wasn’t helped by the sending off of Mark Lombard, who lashed out at a C of I player via a headbutt, in frustration at being fouled.

Malk Holmes hit C of I’s second on 44 minutes, before Adam O’Callaghan put the icing on the cake with six minutes to go.
C of I are still on contention for a potential treble – they are in the Irish Junior Cup final against Pembroke Wanderers in a couple of weeks and are still in with a shout in the Charity Cup.
Meanwhile, Ashton claimed a thrilling women’s Division Two Cup final on penalty stroke against Catholic Institute, after the sides couldn’t be separated in normal time.
Brid Sheehan struck for Ashton with Katie Campbell replying for Institute in an end-to-end encounter, before the Cork side took the strokes lottery 4-3.
Meanwhile, Ireland’s chances of securing a second EuroHockey League qualification spot received a huge boost yesterday when Pembroke claimed the EuroHockey Club trophy with a comprehensive 4-0 final dismissal of Dinamo Elektrostal in Dublin yesterday.
Alan Sothern was once again Pembroke’s star. He hit his third hat-trick in nine days, and his second at this tournament, and could even afford to miss a penalty stroke late on.
Conor Harte – who along with brother David had missed the previous day’s action due to a family funeral – got the fourth to wrap things up for Pembroke.
The win, added to Glenanne’s triumph in this competition in Paris last year, came with a huge added bonus for Irish hockey. Those performances, plus Three Rock’s success in negotiating the opening round of the EuroHockey League, means Ireland should receive two places in next season’s EHL.
They have now leap-frogged Russia and Scotland to be the eighth ranked European team in the club rankings. Should the second slot become a reality, the Irish Senior Cup winners will join the Irish Hockey League victors in next season’s competition. If Pembroke manage to claim both those titles, the IHL runners-up will get the slot.
However, there wasn’t as much luck for Pegasus, who were also up against Russian opposition in the promotion playoff at the EuroHockey Cup Winners Trophy in Lille. Kommunalschick Barnul defeated the Belfast ladies 1-0, to instead take the promotion spot for Russia.

Ok, if anyone saw the height difference between the two players the headbutt would seem minor, and also, the tackler that he recieved moments before and the backlash of the stick would be bad enough to send even the quietest player over the line. I just wonder thou did either of these players take into the account of onlookers and children, and how this came across. Yes a head butt is not the best way, but provoking and goading players should not be done either. What example is being set you the younger kids watching this game. Your there to play hockey, not to have a fist fight…but in fairness, whar happens on the pitch stayed on the pitch and both should good gamesmanship after the game.
The tackles weren’t that bad. There were certainly worse tackles throughout the match and no one reacted in that way to any of those. The umpires didn’t control the game unfortunately.
its a bit ridiculous that a team who cant play the ehl rules very well, could end up being sent to ehl what do people think. if the winners of senior cup are goin to ehl then why isnt isc played with ehl/ihl rules?
What about the Women’s Munster Division 2 Cup Final (same as Mens Munster Junior Cup), which also took place on Monday in Quins – is that not worthy of a mention?
It was an equally important match for both teams involved, which went right down to the wire with penalty strokes, and drew a much bigger crowd than the mens match before it.

I think Harlequins win in the European Trophy 2007 has also contributed to Ireland’s improvement in the EHL rankings!
