Ashton advanced to the final of the Munster Senior Schoolboys Cup yesterday as Dan Hobbs’ drag-flicking prowess helped them overcome a stubborn Midleton College side 4-1. Peter Catchpole’s deflection had given the city school, coached by Irish international David Hobbs, a slender half-time advantage. But two powerful flicks from Cork Harlequins star Dan Hobbs – with a John Sweetnam effort for Midleton sandwiched in between – put them in control, before David Doherty finished off a breakaway to seal victory. Ashton now advance to a final meeting with Bandon Grammar School, but that game will not be played prior to the next John Waring All-Ireland Schoolboys Cup competition, which both sides have qualified for, set to take place in Dublin next week. As a result, the schools will toss a coin to decide who competes in each group.

  1. What a sad state of affairs that the representatives from Munster couldn’t have played
the cup final on time. Bandon qualified for the final weeks ago. Why couldn’t Ashton
and Midleton have played weeks ago and then we wouldn’t be in the ridiculous situation of tossing a coin. Does the Munster Branch have any say?
