Simon Wolfe’s exquisite hat-trick underpinned a fine Ashton attacking performance as they routed Bandon Grammar in yesterday’s Munster Senior Schoolboys Cup semi-final at a snowy Ashton School.

Gary Wilkinson’s pinpoint shot put Ashton in front but Bandon were well in it for most of the first half; Mark Kingston had a penalty stroke shout turned down when sent through one on one before Philip Peters made the most of a botched short corner routine to level it.
Wolfe eventually put Ashton back in front when he clattered home a reverse from the top after a corner stop went somewhat awry, before David Whitaker flicked home just before half-time to give Ashton breathing space.
And Ashton picked off a tiring BGS side at will in the second half, with Wolfe’s hat-trick goal the pick of the bunch. Ben O’Mahony beat three tacklers and played in the Ireland U18 hitman, whose first touch put the ball in the air before his second rifled an unstoppable volley to the roof of the net.
Either side of that strike, Peter Daunt had picked out Wolfe for a first-time finish from a 90-degree pull-back, before Richard Lynch dived to poke home on his reverse.
Bandon did pull one back through a drag-flick from fit-again Julian Dale, before Philip Brownlow clipped home a reverse as he fell over after going one-on-one with Hugh O’Connell in the BGS goal.
Paul Holland tapped in to make it eight before Peters potted a corner rebound to have the last say for BGS, although their talisman Stuart Miller’s schools hockey career came to an unfortunate conclusion as he was yellow-carded in the last minute for taking out Ben O’Mahony in an act of frustration.
Ashton will play Villiers in the final, at a date and venue TBC.

This was a great game to watch. Very entertaining with both sides going all out to score throughout the whole match. Scoreline doesn’t reflect the true game but Ashton’s finishing was brilliant.
Given the fact that there was a seeding tournament before the Irish Schools tournament in October where Ashton and Bandon were seeding 1 and 2, surely it would make sense to have these teams on opposite sides of the draw come Senior Cup time?
Seems unfair for Bandon in this case and would lead to a more keenly contested final.
The tournament before the Irish Schools was a qualifier for the Irish Schhols competition. Each school played each other once, leaving teams ranked 1-4 (Newtown didn’t travel). The top 3 were entered into the Irish schools. This qualifying tournament has nothing to do with drawing for the Senior cup.
Villiers drew with Bandon in the qualifiers, beat them in the league before Christmas and lost in a friendly last week so have earned their spot in the final. It should be a good match!

Given the fact that boys hockey in munster is at a all time low I think we have to look at the bigger picture.Munster hockey is not just cork hockey and its important that we develop the game in the whole provience.Although Ashton are very strong this year they still beat Bandon 8-3…
Villiers will probaly put up a better game than Bandon would in the final.
For overall player development it’s great to see other schools than cork schools in a final.
